The Eco Schools Green Flag is an accreditation which is awarded after a school showcases their work towards 7 steps of environmental action. At Castle Mead Academy, our committed Eco Team focused on the topics of marine, biodiversity and global citizenship. We are delighted to renew our green flag accreditation this year with distinction!

We were delighted to read that your year with Eco-Schools has again been such a positive experience with far greater
engagement and involvement in environmental issues across the whole school community – children, staff and parents
alike. It is superb that your pupil’s knowledge and awareness of the issues has expanded and they learnt how their own
choices and actions can help make a positive difference. Equally great is hearing about the success of projects like your
fantastic Solar Energy Day, your new EV chargers (shame you didn’t get the solar panel funding this year), your terrific
anti-littering work and the used fashion event, which were well supported by the families – really superb results!

We Also Loved:

• We loved reading about your Wear It Forward fashion event to reduce waste and your school’s environmental
  impact and that this was greatly supported by donations and participation from staff and families. This kind of
  initiative really enhances pupil’s learning and teaches them about the importance of reducing waste, recycling
  and how individual efforts can find a means to reuse items and give them a ‘second life’, saving resources.
• It was wonderful to read about your terrific Solar Energy Engagement Day, teaching pupils about fossil fuels and
  renewable energy, making their own Climate Action Plans and getting GBESP to create a school decarbonisation
  plan and having EV car chargers installed. These are all fantastically positive changes that can help to reduce your
  school’s carbon footprint, raise awareness and make a real difference to fossil fuel use and climate change.
• We were very impressed by your superb anti-littering scheme where your pupils undertook a terrific community
  litter-pick with volunteers from the Canal & River Trust and held an anti-littering assembly focused on reducing
  plastics and sustainable solutions. We are certain that these worthy efforts have had a really positive impact and
  enhanced your entire outdoor school and local environment – a real community-minded project, well done.
• We were impressed by the excellent links you forged between these important issues and your school curriculum,
  with lessons on the Christian belief in Stewardship of the land and life upon it, population pressures and over
  consumption and the causes of climate change. These are excellent teaching topics that will have reinforced your
  pupil’s learning about the concepts of sustainability and fostered a real sense of environmental responsibility.
• It was also terrific to read about the great efforts you made to keep families and the wider community informed
  and involved about your projects, by using a dedicated Eco-board, assemblies, newsletters and social media to
  engage staff and families in your litter-picking and Wear It Forward fashion projects. This is a fantastic way of
  increasing involvement and extends the effects of your good work far beyond the boundaries of your school.
